Fly Fishing Jerry’s Run Virginia
Jerry’s Run is a small, freestone stream in the Alleghany Highlands of Virginia near West Virginia that holds some good rainbow trout in its upper area and some native brook trout in its remote areas. It is stocked twice a year by the state. I’m not certain if other species
are stocked. We have only caught rainbows the one and only time we stopped to fish it. Its a beautiful, slate bottom stream that runs at a gradual decline. There are native brook trout in its upper section but you have to do a fair amount of hiking to reach them. About four miles of its water isn’t accessible by road.
The stream is not far off I-64 on Forest Service Road #198. The road runs along the stream. The upper part is heavily fished after it is stocked. You probably wouldn’t have to go far on Jerry’s Run Trail to find some good native brook trout water. We just didn’t take the time to do that.
The stream flows through National Forest Land so there isn’t any access problems other than your lack of willingness to hike. The maps show several small feeder streams flowing into Jerry’s Run and I would think they would also have brook trout. Fly fishing Jerry’s Run in the area we fished was a lot of fun and we did catch a few rainbows in a very short time. We did notice a lot of man created trash and beer cans along the upper part
of the stream. Its a shame people will do that to such a beautiful little mountain stream. We were short of time, or I would have liked to have hiked back into the native brook trout country. I have an idea that is not done very often although Jerry’s Run Trail is a popular hiking destination.
Fly Fishing Gear, Tackle and Trout Flies for Jerry’s Run Virginia
This is the perfect stream to fish as light of a fly line as you would like to use. A one weight would work fine in Jerry’s Run for its native brook trout.
Fly Line:
We suggest either a 4weight or lighter, floating fly line for all of the fly-fishing.
Fly Rod:
The four weight rod should be between eight and nine feet in length with a medium
action. You may want to use a shorter length but we like the length for making roll cast.
Fly Reel:
The reel for the rod isn’t important as long as it is light. There would be nothing wrong with a clicker drag.
Leaders:
You should use at least a 9 foot leader. You should have them in sizes ranging from 4X for
nymphs, up to 7X for small dry flies.
Tippet:
You should carry extra tippet material in sizes ranging from 4X to 7X.
Waders:
You should not wade unless it is necessary to get the fly to places the trout may be feeding or hiding. We do suggest waders for this stream because there are many places you will need them.
Wading Boots:
Felt soles would be our first choice. If you are concerned about the spread of Didymo, the
new rubber soles may be your choice. This may help prevent spreading this stuff to this
beautiful little stream called Jerry’s Run.
Flies:
We recommend our “Perfect Fly” Trout Flies. Our mayfly, caddisfly and stonefly imitations
are the most realistic imitations commercially available. We also have high quality but low
priced generic and attractor flies.
