Fly Fishing Little Piney Creek Missouri
Little Piney Creek is one of Missouri’s best little spring creek, wild trout streams. It’s formed by several springs and provides a few miles of trout fishing opportunities. Lane Spring is the best known spring that forms Little Piney Creek. It’s located in the Lane Spring Recreational Area of the Mark Twain National Forest.

The upper section of Little Piney Creek is classified by the state of Missouri as Blue Ribbon Waters in order to protect its wild rainbow trout population. Only artificial flies and lures may be used in this section. Only one trout that’s over 18 inches may be taken and that’s of course, would be an exceptional catch. Just below that is what the state calls the White Ribbon section. It is stocked and trout can be taken from this section.

The Blue Ribbon section starts near the headwaters of the stream but the most productive area of Little Piney Creek is located near and downstream of the springs near highway #63. There’s access at the highway #63 bridge, Lane Spring Recreational Area, Milldam Hollow, and Vida Slab.

Fly fishing Little Piney Creek is best during the Spring and Fall months. Wild trout can be taken during the Summer but low water can limit the habitat of the trout. Long, light leaders and tippets are usually required and more importantly, you must stay hidden for the trout.

Little Piney Creek has some aquatic insect hatches. There’s some Blue-winged Olives, Brown Drakes and a few other species of mayflies along with several species of caddisflies.

The White Ribbon section of Little Piney Creek starts at Milldam Hollow and extends downstream to the county road # 7360 bridge. The stocked trout do move upstream from this area into the Blue Ribbon section due to the cooler water.
