Fly Fishing Little Sandy Creek
Pennsylvania
Little Sandy Creek is a tributary of Sandy Creek located in Northwest Pennsylvania. The stream, which begins near Wades Corner, is only six miles long but well worth fishing. It has a very good population of wild brown trout.
The best fishing for wild browns is in the headwaters above T-334. The stream is small in this area and not so easy to fish, but very enjoyable if you like small stream fishing. Below T -334, the stream is approximately 30 feet in width. In this area the creek takes on the classic trout stream configuration consisting of pools, runs and riffles.
Little Sandy Creek has a Delayed Harvest Fly Fishing Only section that extends from State Route #3024 at Polk upstream for 1.3 miles to an old bridge at the Polk Center pump house. The area contains both wild and stocked brown trout. Most all of Little Sandy Creek’s banks are enclosed with bushes and trees. This provides shade and helps provide hiding places for the brown trout.
You can access Little Sandy Creek at Route #62 and State Route #3024. There are some smaller roads that lead off 3024 to the stream. Hiking is required in some areas to reach the water but they are usually short distances.
The upper part of Little Sandy Creek can become difficult to fish during the summer months because the water gets low and clear. The wild browns can become very selective.
The stream has a good population of aquatic insects including some Green Drake mayflies. There’s also many other mayflies, caddisflies and some stoneflies. Terrestrials are popular during the summer.
