Fly Fishing North Creek Virginia
North Creek is a small brook trout stream located in the Glenwood Ranger’s District of the Jefferson National Forest. It has a “catch and release” section with some good brook trout fishing opportunities. Fly fishing North Creek will test your bow and arrow casting ability. It is truly a small stream.
There is also a “put and take” section that runs along the road from Jennings Creek to the tailhead, but don’t let the sight of it discourage you. Once you reach the trailhead, things change. The trail parallels the creek on its way to Apple Orchard Falls but is usually a good
distance away from it..
There are problems that arise on North Creek during low water conditions. It may appear to go dry in places at times but the further you travel upstream, the more you will notice the stream reappears and maintains enough water to keep a decent population of wild brook trout. Springs also help maintain the coolness of the water during the warmer months of the year, not to mention the higher pH of the water that accounts for plenty of food for the trout.
North Creek is a very small, tightly enclosed brook trout stream that isn’t easy to access in places. It isn’t easy to cast or move upstream in many areas. You have to do some work to reach the deeper pools in places. I’m sure the stream looks entirely different depending on the time of year you fish it and the amount of recent rainfall in the drainage area.
Springtime brings about several aquatic insect hatches.. There are Little Brown and Little Yellow stoneflies; Quill Gordon, Blue Quill, and Light Cahill mayflies; along with Green Sedges, Cinnamon Caddis and Great Autumn Brown Caddisflies. During the summer months imitations of terrestrial insects produce well, especially ant and beetle patterns.
Fly Fishing Gear, Tackle and Trout Flies for North Creek Virginia
Fly Line:
You would probably want a 3 or 4 weight fly line for your dry fly fishing North Creek. You could get by using a 5 weight, floating fly line for everything.
Fly Rod:
I would suggest a rod for the 3 or 4 weight line and another for the 5 weight line if you choose to use it. The three or four weight rod should be between eight and nine feet in length, and a medium fast action would work best in our opinion.
Fly Reel:
The reel for the three or the four weight rod should be light and with a smooth drag. A disc drag that adjust in fine increments would be best for the five weight line.
Leaders:
We recommend a 7 and half foot leader for North Creek. There are situations where you would want to go up to 9 feet. I would suggest having them in sizes ranging from 2X for streamers, up to 7X for small dry flies and midges, in both the 7 and half and 9 foot lengths.
Tippet:
You should have extra tippet in sizes ranging from 2X to 7X.
Waders:
Waders are not necessary in the summer for North Creek but we would suggest them any time it is too cold to wet wade.
Wading Boots:
Much of the bottom is rock, sand and gravel. Felt soles are the best.
Trout Flies:
We recommend “Perfect Flies”. We think they are the best trout flies you can purchase. If you haven’t already tried them, we certainly hope you will. You want be disappointed. We have imitations of every insect that hatches on North Creek as well as a full line of terrestrial patterns. You may also notice that we sell standard, generic and attractor flies at a very low price.
