Fly Fishing Cochetopa Creek Colorado
Cochetopa Creek is a small stream about 39 miles long that’s a tributary of Tomichi Creek. Most of Cochetopa Creek is what’s best described as a meadow stream that lies in wide-open country. It has a good population of wild rainbow, brown and cutthroat trout. Fly fishing Cochetopa Creek provides anglers the ideal small stream, dry fly conditions for much of the season.

Cochetopa Creek has always been thought to have a lot of private water and it does, but there’s also plenty of public water you can fish. Coleman Ranch and Synder Ranch, now offer access to eight miles of the stream with “catch and release” and artificial flies and lures only. That, in addition, the tributary streams Chavez Creek, Stewart Creek, Los Pinos Creek offers plenty of fine small stream fishing for cutthroat and rainbows.

Like many other Colorado trout streams, Cochetopa Creek is just about impossible to fish during runoff which usually occurs during May and June, but by the first of July, the stream is usually in prime condition. Fishing continues to be good throughout the Fall months.

We have fished this stream on three different occasions are were very successful each time. One trip that took place in April before the runoff started produced more success than the other two in July and August.

Although Cochetopa Creek isn’t thought of as a aquatic insect factory, samples of the larvae taken from it showed right the opposite. There were lots of insects including several different species of caddisflies, mayflies, stoneflies and midges along with some crustaceans, sculpin and baitfish. The Pale Morning Dun hatches in July were huge.

The fish average a smaller size than the big nearby streams but there are plenty of them and based on our experience, the action was constant.
