Fly Fishing Straight, Winter, Panther, Obsidian and Indian Creeks Yellowstone National Park
Wyoming
These small streams all flow together near the Indian Creek Campground area of the North Loop Road near the Gibbon River Bridge. All of them have a good population of small brook trout.

These small streams are very easy to access, yet they provide some privacy from other park visitors if you want to travel a ways off the road. The creeks are a great place to take those youngsters who you want to teach to fly fish because they can expect to get plenty of strikes
and even catch some fish. They are also great just to give anyone a feel for catching trout on the fly.

The technique for catching the small brook trout is fairly simple. The little trout always seem to be hungry and strike the fly with vigor. You can use generic or attractor flies but specific imitations work best. Most of the time they will readily take dry flies but yo can catch them on
nymphs and wet flies when conditions are not right for surface feeding. .

We suggest that you stay low and as well hidden as possible to keep from spooking the trout. Other than that, there isn’t a lot to catching them. Short, upstream cast work best. Drag-free drifts help. Although the brook trout are not very selective, they will focus on eating what’s most plentiful and available at the time. It is always best to use an imitation that matches the hatch or what’s about to hatch.
