Fly Fishing The Wenaha River Oregon
The Wenaha River is a tributary of the Grande Ronde River in Northeastern Oregon. It flows from the Blue Mountains of the Wenaha-Tucannon Wilderness located in the Umatilla National Forest. The river has a good population of large, rainbow trout and bull trout. It’s one of the few streams in Oregon, where “catch and release” of bull trout is permitted. It’s also a good steelhead fishery.

Most of the Wenaha River consist of fast pocket water. It flows through forested canyon with boulders scattered throughout its streambed. Only its bottom few miles can be reached by road. Most all the river must be reached on foot. A trail follows the stream for thirty miles. Fly fishing the Wenaha River can be a wonderful experience. It’s a beautiful, wild scenic river well worth anyone’s time to fish.

Steelhead fishing takes place in the lower six miles of the stream. Its open for steelhead fishing from January 1 through April 16 and again from September 1 to December 31. Fly fishing the Wenaha for steelhead is very popular.

The Wenaha River has a good population of aquatic insects including mayflies, stoneflies, midges and caddisflies. Terrestrial insects are popular during the summer months.
