Fly Fishing The Ammonoosuc River New Hampshire
The Ammonoosuc River is a 55 mile long river located in Northwestern New Hampshire. It forms from a discharge from Lakes of the Clouds in the beautiful White Mountains.  It flows from the slopes of Mt. Washington in White Mountain National Forest and then to the Connecticut River near Haverhill, New Hampshire.

The Ammonoosuc River is best known for its brook trout. Fishing is best in the fast water sections of the uppermost parts of the river. The water is mostly pocket water, with plenty of runs, riffles and short plunge pools suitable for brook trout. Fly fishing the Ammonoosuc River for its wild brook trout is both productive and pleasurable.

The Wild Ammonoosuc River is a major tributary that’s about 14 miles long that also contains a good population of brook trout. It’s confluence with the main stem is near
Bath. The lower section of the river is stocked by the state and contains brook, brown and rainbow trout. These uppermost sections remain cool even during the summer months.

The lower section of the Ammonoosuc River runs through open farmland and gets too warm to support trout during the hottest part of summer. It consist of larger, longer pools or moderately flowing water connected by riffles. Four dams are located in the lower
river.

Access to the river is easy and plentiful. Route #302 follows along the upper section above Bethlehem. The Wild Ammonoosuc is closely followed by Route #112.

The Ammonoosuc River has a good population of aquatic insects including mayflies, stoneflies, caddisflies and midges. Terrestrial insects are also plentiful during
the warmer months of the year.
