Fly Fishing The Buffalo River Wisconsin
The Buffalo River is a 68 mile long river that’s a tributary of the Mississippi River. It is formed at Osseo by the its North and South Forks. Each of these forks is approximately 16 miles long. From Osseo, the main stem Buffalo River flows past Strum, Eleva and Mondovi.
The Buffalo River holds some very nice size and a good population of brown trout. Trout are present in the North and South forks of the Buffalo River and the main stem downstream as far as Strum. Below there, the water gets too warm to support trout and is more of a smallmouth bass fishery. All together, including the branches and main stem, there’s over thirty miles of water that holds trout..
All forks are category 4 trout regulation streams. This means it has a bag limit of 3, with a minimum size of 12 inches for brown trout, and 8 inches for the brook trout.
A segment of the Main Fork is under Category 5 regulations. That means it has a bag limit of two but only one may be a brown trout and it has a minimum length of 18 inches. It also requires artificial lures and flies only. This helps insure this section of the stream will continue to have some nice size trout.
You can access the Buffalo River from several different bridges that cross the stream as well as parking areas along highways 10 and B.
The Buffalo River has several species of aquatic insects and plenty of terrestrials during the summer months. Sculpin and baitfish are also plentiful and a major source of food for the brown trout.
