Fly Fishing The Maury River Virginia
The Maury River varies from fast, white-water to more moderately flowing smooth water. It has some sections of slow moving pools, so the type of water changes depending on the location. It flows through the Goshen Pass Scenic Area in western Virginia in
the Alleghany Highlands.

This river appears to be the perfect trout stream but it apparently gets a little too warm in hot weather to support a lot of trout. It also doesn’t seem to have many wild trout although it may have a very few stream bred trout. It is heavily stocked during the
winter months. I would think it would only have a limited number of holdover trout. The water gets low and the summer heat takes its toll on most of the trout. Of course, many are caught shortly after the river is stocked.

The Maury River is known more for its fine smallmouth bass fishing that trout fishing. Fly fishing the river can be enjoyable at the right place and time.

The Maury River flows from Lake Merriweather for about a total distance of thirty miles. It’s a tributary of the James River.. Route #39 follows much of river which provides very easy access. Roads #631 and #633 also follow the river.

The easy access is both good and bad. Good in the sense it is easy to get to the water and bad in the sense too many anglers crowd the areas the trout are stocked in and fishing can be more of a chore than a pleasure, especially on weekends.
