Fly Fishing North Fork of the Cherry River West Virginia
The North Fork of the Cherry River is one of two headwaters streams that form the main stem of the Cherry River. It begins in southeastern Pocahontas County.

There’s a “catch and release, fly fishing only” 1.8- mile section of the North Fork of the Cherry River extending upstream from Richwood’s water supply dam to first state Route #39 bridge. You can access the “catch and release” section from state Route #39. Fly fishing the North Fork Cherry River is best in the “catch and release” section. The section of the river upstream from the bridge is managed under normal put and take regulations.

The North Fork of the Cherry is stocked with rainbows, browns and some golden rainbow trout. It also has a population of native brook trout. The stream holds over trout well and there are larger trout that have grown from stocked fingerlings.

The North Fork Cherry is a small, pristine stream. It usually runs clear and fast. There’s plenty of runs and deep pools and some riffles. There are plenty of pull-over areas along route 39/55. In many places the stream is well covered with overhanging tree limbs and casting can be rather tight in some areas. The stream flows through the Monongahela National Forest.

This stream is a good example of aquatic reclamation. At one time the PH of the water was very low or acidic The Department of Natural Resources started treating the stream with limestone a few years ago and the stream is now capable of staining a good population of trout.
