Fly Fishing Yellow Creek Pennsylvania
Not to be confused with the famous Yellow Breeches Creek, Yellow Creek is located in Bedford County, Pennsylvania. It’s one of many southeastern limestone spring creeks that hold trout. It begins near Woodbury and flows into the Raystown Branch of the Juniata River near Hopewell. The stream is stocked by the state but it also has a good population of wild, stream-bred trout.
Yellow Creek has a special regulation area with “catch and release only” regulations that permits “fly fishing only”. Two sections of the stream are stocked and open to regular statewide regulations. There’s approximately ten miles of stocked water. Fly fishing Yellow Creek can range from easy to difficult, depending on whether you catch stocked or wild trout.
Above Loysburg, the stream flows through open meadows and is more of a classic limestone spring creek. Much of it flows through pastures and there are some problems with siltation and runoff. Downstream from there the stream flows through Loysburg Gap. There’s large boulders and deep pools in this section of the stream. Fast riffles and pocket water support trout well in this area.
The delayed harvest section is loccated off State Road 1024. It begins upstream at the Maple Run confluence and goes upstream for one mile. The lower sections of the stream get too warm to support trout well during the hot summer but fishing for stockers is good in the Spring and Fall.
