Fly Fishing Young Womans Creek Pennsylvania
Young Womans Creek is one of Pennsylvania’s better freestone trout streams. Both its Left and Right Branches and its main stem holds trout, although I think the branches are the best. The Right Branch of the creek has a “Selective Harvest Area” that runs from the Beechwood Trail, downstream to the state forest boundary. The state still stocks much of the stream but I have always wondered it that was really necessary. It does have some stream-born trout as well as holdover, brown trout. The stockers compete for the food and it has to have an effect on the wild trout.
Fly fishing Young Womans Creek is generally good anytime of the season because the water stays cool. It has a very good canopy of tree limbs that covers most of its water. The higher up the two branches you travel, the smaller the stream gets and the cooler the water stays. The stream can be accessed from state road #120.
This stream has a good number of hatches. Its Blue Quill, Hendricksons, Quill Gordons, Sulphurs and Green Drake hatches are among the better ones but it has just about all the mayflies that exist in Pennsylvania. The stream also has a good number of stoneflies such as Little Yellow and Little Green Stoneflies. It also has Large Giant Stoneflies. Of course there’s several different species of caddisflies but most of the are the Green Sedges, Cinnamon and Brachycentrus species.
Young Womans Creek is easy to wade. It consist of lots of long pools with riffles between them. There are various size rocks and boulders scattered throughout the water creating pockets and hiding places for the brown trout. All in all, its a stream you wouldn’t want to
pass up.
