Fly Fishing West Clear Creek Arizona
West Clear Creek is located in the Mogollon Rim area of Arizona. It is a tributary of the Verde River that flows through a steep canyon as it cuts its way through the rim. It can be difficult to negotiate in its upper reaches because of the high canyon walls line both sides of the stream in some areas. It forces one to wade some rather deep pools in a few places.

West Clear Creek is easiest to access on its lower end near Camp Verde off of highway #260. One fairly easy access into the area is from Bull Pen Ranch Trailhead. The upper end of West Clear Creek can be accessed from the Tramway Trail off Lake Mary Road.

Fly fishing West Clear Creek can be very productive in the late Spring provided the water levels are not high. Most of the upper part of West Clear Creek holds quite a few stream-bred trout. That’s not the case on the lower end. The lower end is heavily stocked and far more popular  to fish. You want have much competition in the upper  section but it takes a good amount of time to hike in and out in the same day. There are some campsites available.

West Clear Creek supports a very good population of aquatic insects. Blue-winged Olives, Tricos, Pale Morning duns, March Browns, and a few other mayflies are present. Caddisflies including Little Black Caddis, Short-horned Sedges, Spotted Sedges and Green Sedges are plentiful. The stream has a hatch of Golden, Little Yellow and Salmonfly stoneflies during the month of late Spring and early summer. Terrestrial insects supplement the aquatics during the Summer months.
